Psychotherapy
Working with me
“We are all strangers to the world, this work, and to ourselves” – Anonymous
I approach each patient with patience, warmth, curiosity, sensitivity, and strength. My aim is to collaborate with you as we explore and grow in the feelings as “Life” grows between you and I in the therapy. I also consider my role as an ambassador to the feelings that come alive between us; feelings that do not yet have a voice. I act as a container or “warm and caring presence” as we encounter painful, scary, beautiful, or powerful feelings. I work with many presentations of psychic pain. Sometimes, these powerful feelings have names (e.g. anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction/substance use, to name a few). I recognize that not every diagnosis has roots in psychic pain, but I examine them through the lens of experience and feelings.
The Method
You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter defeat, so that you can know who you are, what you can rise from, and how you can still come out of it” – M. Angelou
The method of psychotherapy is the gradual process of exploration in the consulting room. The patient brings content and process, while the therapist listens and holds the experience. Over time, the patient and therapist together learn how to explore the experiences of the patient both in the outside world, in the consulting room, and personally. I initially believed that the method was systematic, but I now believe that it is alive and has a will of its own. This is out of respect for psychic forces occurring each and every moment. The key of the method is in the holding. I experience holding-as-attention to three worlds: the patient’s, the therapist’s, and the relationship between patient and therapist.
The tool, therefore, is the relationship that is developing, unfolding, and being forged in those three worlds. The tool, or rather the instrument is the therapy, the relationship developed over time, the exposure of feeling and experience within the same pool. In that place, with no small amount of dedication, care, and love – is the patient’s world experienced and understood.
